Ngaire Blankenberg and Javier Jimenez to address the United Cities Local Government Culture Summit in Bilbao on the importance of museums to the soft power of cities.

The three will be speaking at the UCLG first Culture Summit which will gather together leaders in local governments from around the world in order to share experiences and support the integration of culture in sustainable development.

Blankenberg, Jimenez and Fernández will draw from the book Cities, Museums and Soft Power, by Gail Lord and Ngaire Blankenberg in which Jimenez writes about the Economics of Cities and Fernández contributes an essay: Global and Local: Fairs and Biennials, Temporary Urbanism and Pop-Up Museums. The book will be released in April 2015 but is available for pre-order now.

"It’s a privilege to be able to speak to a group of active decision-makers in cities about how museums and cities can better work together" says Ngaire Blankenberg, "Many cities embrace festivals and events but don’t always see the many ways that cultural institutions can and do support civil society and address social exclusion- a major challenge in many of today’s urban centres."

The United Cities Local Government has members from over 1000 cities and regions and 155 national associations, representing 140 of the 192 member states of the United Nations. Its aim is to defend the interests of local and regional governments on the world stage.

The discussion follows a panel in Doha, Qatar convened by the International New York Times, Art for Tomorrow, in which Gail Lord, Co-President, spoke on March 15, 2015, about Global Cities, Global Economics, Global Tourism, Local Stories and Soft Power as part of a panel led by Florian Wupperfeld.

The contents of both talks will be available at www.lord.ca/SoftPower.
