Canadian Museum for Human Rights and Viola Desmond featured on new $10 bill
The first regularly circulated Canadian bank note to feature a human rights theme was unveiled on Thursday March 8th, International Women’s Day. The $10 bill displays a portrait of human rights defender Viola Desmond, and on the reverse an image of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR). Viola Desmond is featured in a major exhibition at CMHR titled One Woman’s Resistance. This also marks the first time that a Canadian museum is depicted on currency. CMHR is the first national museum solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights
“This is a proud day for women of colour for all women and for museums,” said Gail Lord, president of Lord Cultural Resources. “I congratulate especially Gail Asper who led the fundraising to make this Museum and this day possible.”
Lord Cultural Resources was involved in CMHR from the early stages in 2000 to opening day in 2014.
