Project Experience

Bytown Museum

2008-09

Housed in Ottawa’s oldest stone building, the Bytown Museum traces the history of Ottawa’s early years, from the construction of the Rideau Canal and the rough-and-tumble days of Bytown, to the city’s emergence as the nation’s capital and beyond. The Museum’s collection of close to 7,000 artifacts includes some singularly important pieces, such as a cast of D’Arcy McGee’s death hand and the flag that was saved from Parliament’s Centre Block during the 1916 fire.

The Bytown Museum selected Lord Cultural Resources to develop a five-year Strategic Plan to include the development of strategic directions and objectives for the five following key areas: community engagement, active artifact collecting, research, programming and accessibility. Lord Cultural Resources also developed a three-year business development plan. The project required engagement of external stakeholders including stakeholder meetings and interviews; literature review; environmental scan; SWOT analysis; facilitation of a board/staff retreat; and identification of strategic directions, goals, objectives and benchmarks.
