United Nations Environment Program

2009-12

United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. In order to raise awareness about the trade-offs associated with any likely solution to the climate problem and increase its public outreach, UNEP has decided to develop a touring exhibition on the policies and the economics of climate change. Audiences throughout the world are increasingly exposed to climate-related stories – predominantly negative and inadequately solution-oriented. However, most people do not understand what the public policy options are to avert the worst consequences of climate change. As a result, the general public has a limited understanding of climate change and is unable to judge the extent to which governments are providing adequate solutions – or not. As growing media attention to the issue has raised the interest of the general public in climate change issues, museums offer a unique place to effect social change: they reach a vast audience and, through advocacy, partnership and learning, can help educate the public.

Lord Cultural Resources was appointed by UNON (United Nations Office at Nairobi) to develop this touring exhibition on the policies and economics of climate change. Our team prepared the terms of reference for the development of this exhibition including the scope, which opened successfully at the major conference on the environment in Rio de Janeiro in 2012.
