Witte Museum

2006, 2008-13

San Antonio's Witte Museum was founded in 1926 and has important collections associated with the natural and cultural history of South Texas.

In 2006 Lord Cultural Resources was asked to assist the Museum with the development of a Master Plan for its long-term expansion. The plans, developed with architects Lake Flato, proposed a Heritage Center addition to an historic building on the Museum grounds, and extensive new construction and exhibition replacement. Two years later we were invited back to develop a facility strategy, a collection analysis and a business plan for the realization of the plan in phases. Based on this work we recommended that the Museum acquire a former office building beside the Museum site, with a view to developing it as Visible Storage and a documentation centre for its extensive collections.

The Museum acquired the building and over the following years we continued with interpretive planning and exhibition design for the Collections and Records Center depicted here. The orientation gallery to the Center is shown above, with a unique rolling rack visible storage display of the paintings collection at upper right, with compact storage shelving awaiting artifacts on the lower right.

More phases continue. An outstanding Texas Heritage Center opened in 2012, and in March 2014, the Witte Museum opened the first phase of the B. Naylor Morton Research & Collections, and have since received an increase in research requests.
