Constitution Hill

In the heart of downtown Johannesburg, South Africa, an extraordinary campus is taken shape. Constitution Hill is the former prison site where the Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa has built its new home. The location of the publicly written and respected Constitution of South Africa, Constitution Hill opened on March 21, 2004, Human Rights Day and the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution in 1994. It is a place that venerates the definition of civil society in 21st century Africa.

Lord Cultural Resources was contracted to work with the Johannesburg Development Authority and its Heritage, Education, Tourism team of committed consultants to plan and infuse new meaning into the heritage components of the former prison compound, which held criminals and political prisoners alike, including Mahatma Gandhi and former South African President and the Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela. Our contribution to this groundbreaking project included Concept Development, Interpretive Planning, and Operations and Business Planning. In addition, we project managed the implementation, rolling out all recommended operations and hiring and training all staff.  We remained on site managing and developing staff for a successful handover in 2005.
