How the Indian everyman became a subject of art

The traveling exhibition, Indian Life & People in the 19th Century, is on display at the CSMVS Museum in Mumbai with 120-odd Company paintings and sculptures that depict life and people of India in the 19th century. Painted by Indian artists for the British patrons, the Company paintings take a distinct theme from the preceding art. Unlike the royal portraits, courtly grandeur, deific and historical scenes alike captured in the miniature paintings, these works offer a view of everyday life in India in the late 18th and 19th century. Urmi Chanda-Vaz from Lord South Asia reflect on this in the article below.
