Project Experience

Great Lakes Visitor Center

2019-20

The Center for Freshwater Research and Education in Sault Saint Marie, is a joint project between Lake Superior State University (LSSU) and the State of Michigan, dedicated to freshwater education and science. The Center will be housed in a brand new building along the St. Mary’s riverfront, and will include office spaces for researchers, laboratories, classrooms and a visitor center.

LSSU has engaged Lord Cultural Resources in association with Xibitz, to plan and design exhibits that will go into the 1,800 square foot visitor center to inform and inspire visitors about Great Lakes ecology and the preservation of this unique and fragile natural resource.

Through a series of meetings, workshops and tours conducted with staff, community stakeholder and advisors, our team has developed a plan that outlines the priorities, goals, and a design approach to realize the vision that emerged from LSSU and the community.

The Visitor Center is expected to open in 2020.
