Sharing Difficult Histories: Interpretation of the Mohawk Institute Residential School
Wednesday, October 8, 10:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m.
The Mohawk Institute, Canada’s longest continuously-operating Residential School for Indigenous children, is being transformed into an education and learning centre focused on Truth and Reconciliation. This session explores how Survivor voices, community collaboration, and innovative exhibition design have shaped its interpretation. Attendees will gain insights into best practices for presenting difficult histories, centering Indigenous perspectives, and integrating language revitalization into cultural spaces. This case study offers valuable lessons for those involved in museum work, historic site interpretation, and community engagement. Learn how the Mohawk Institute’s transformation fosters culturally-based education, healing, and long-term Reconciliation efforts within Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities alike.
