Ready to Rock: New Dinosaur Exhibit Opens at Museum of the Rockies

For 40 years, the Museum of the Rockies (MOR) in Bozeman, Montana has been a leader in the field of paleontology. This month, the new Cretaceous Crossroads exhibit opened—MOR's first new paleontology exhibit in over 10 years, highlighting the Late Cretaceous Period in Montana..

In 2023, Lord teamed up with Bluewater Studio and WeatherstonBruer Associates to create this new gallery with a goal to showcase fossils from MOR’s amazing collections. What makes MOR’s work impressive is the large number of holotypes they hold. (Holotypes are the original named fossil specimens that define a species and serve as their benchmark.) This gallery features never-before-seen dinosaurs that are new to science as well as known and beloved species, and showcases the people behind the research and the science that helps us learn more about ancient life on Earth.

“The idea behind the Cretaceous Crossroads experience is that spark of inquiry and sense of wonder that dinosaurs inspire. Together with the paleontology and exhibit teams at MOR, we wanted to tell the stories of extreme change in both species and environments during the Late Cretaceous Period. The new gallery draws on MOR's incredible collections, including fresh-from-the-field finds. We would get photos of discoveries — potentially brand-new species — while they were in dig season in Montana’s formations, and I’d feel my own childhood excitement return!”

"Where I grew up, my memories of dinosaurs are limited to TV shows, movies, and rare natural history museum visits during family vacations abroad. When we started this project, I suddenly understood why so many children (and adults!) continue to be captivated by dinosaurs. Cretaceous Crossroads makes complex ideas accessible for non-experts, encourages visitors to get curious and think critically, and spotlights the dedicated, hardworking people who study the past to help us make sense of our present. It's been a privilege to be a part of this new exhibit and to see the overwhelmingly positive response!”
