Project Experience

Basketball Experience Centre

2024

The game of basketball was invented by Canadian educator Dr. James Naismith. The first basketball game was played in Springfield Massachusetts in 1891 but the building where it took place has long been demolished. One of the first games in Canada took place two years later when a Canadian student of Dr. Naismith took a job at the YMCA in St. Stephen, New Brunswick. The former YMCA building still exists today, including the world’s oldest surviving basketball court within it. Thanks to the efforts of a group of concerned citizens, the building was saved and acquired by the Town of St. Stephen to enable the potential development of a Basketball Experience Centre within it.

Following the development of an architectural and exhibition concept plan for the project, Lord Cultural Resources was engaged to prepare an operations-focused feasibility study. As part of a testimonial letter regarding our work, the President of Canada’s 1st Basketball Inc .wrote, “Lord was selected because of their experience and credibility for this type of work. They met the high standard we expected, and I would recommend them for work of this nature.”.
