Project Experience

Connecticut Science Center
Adriaen’s Landing is a riverfront site with great potential on the Connecticut River in the historic heart of Hartford, adjacent to the new Riverfront Plaza and the remarkably successful Riverfront Recapture project. The Capital City Economic Development Authority (CCEDA) engaged Lord Cultural Resources to develop the concept for a major public attraction at this site.
We undertook extensive community consultation, market analysis and an intensive study of the natural and human heritage resources of the Hartford area, all of which resulted in a Concept Plan for a state-of-the-art Science Center that would incorporate aspects of the Connecticut River's natural history, ranging from the age of dinosaurs through to contemporary science and technology developments by Hartford's high-tech industries. The project went going forward as the Connecticut Center for Science & Exploration, and we were proud to be part of Cesar Pelli’s architectural team that won the competition for its design.
Brendan M. Fox, then Executive Director of CCEDA, wrote, “The project is taking shape in terms of its vision and organization. This is in no small part a function of the extensive efforts that the Lord Cultural Resources organization has undertaken in collaboration with us over the course of the past year ... Our Board believes that this foundation of market research, community outreach and conceptual development positions this project for success.
This great new science center opened in 2009, and immediately became a central attraction in Hartford.
