Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum

2008-12

On June 1, 2007, Michigan State University (MSU) announced that a new world-class art museum would be built on campus. The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, designed by world-renowned Pritzker prize winner Zaha Hadid, brings international attention to MSU, the region and the State of Michigan. The Broad Museum of Art is a nexus for the visual arts, aimed at enhancing cultural exchange at MSU and in the East Lansing community. A key factor in the planning has been the transition of the existing Kresge Art Museum, which has become part of the Museum.

Lord Cultural Resources was initially hired to work with the design team to refine the space program, review the design, and comment on the museological standards for the building. Based upon this work and Lord Cultural Resources’ ability to deliver highly integrated services that ensure intellectual, financial, operational, educational, and programmatic goals are incorporated into every recommendation, Michigan State asked Lord Cultural Resources to prepare a comprehensive Strategic Institutional Plan. The result was a definitive and complete plan that took the museum to opening day on November 11, 2012.

“As incoming Director for this new institution I can say unabashedly that the detailed and quite extensive report completed by Lord Cultural Resources has been an enormously helpful, indeed, essential tool in going forward with this project. It provided the basis for all future thinking about the museum before my hiring and it is my guide as I proceed with fulfilling the numerous opening tasks for the new Broad museum. Their assistance was extraordinary.”

“As we planned for a new art museum building by Zaha Hadid, Lord Cultural Resources provided global perspective, professional insight, and astute guidance for the building’s program and best practices. Concurrently, the firm developed a suite of institutional, business, and implementation reports, which we were able to present to our new director as a resource for exploration of future possibilities and decision-making.”
