Project Experience

Lumpkin’s Jail Site
The City of Richmond was a major hub for the transfer, sale, and exchanged of enslaved peoples in the U.S. For more than 15 years, the Richmond Slave Trail Commission has been dedicated to preserving and honoring the city’s history of enslavement. Through a competitive selection process, Lord Cultural Resources was engaged to develop a comprehensive concept and implementation plan to connect these powerful sites of conscience—ensuring that their histories are interpreted with depth, accuracy, and respect. Lord was later re-commissioned to complete a citywide engagement around the Lumpkin’s Jail Site, the largest slave holding facility in the U.S. until its closing during the Civil War. As part of the project, our team also developed an institutional plan to create a full visitor experience at this powerful site.
