Museum of African American Music

2002-05

Located in the historic Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District in Newark, the Museum of African American Music (MoAAM) is the first institution of its kind to bring all of the musical contributions of African-Americans under one roof. Jazz, gospel, hip-hop, rock & roll, blues, house music, rhythm & blues, and many other modes of musical expression are gathered together in an exciting interactive space for exploring the great breadth of African American music. MoAAM has been named a Smithsonian affiliate and is the centerpiece of the redevelopment of Newark’s Symphony Hall West district.

Lord Cultural Resources was commissioned to complete a Business Plan that allowed MoAAM to reach its goal of being a Museum that is informative, inviting, instructional, educational, refreshing and fun. Lord Cultural Resources was later retained to complete a full master plan for the facility that would ensure its function as an economic development engine for a burgeoning arts community that included several vibrant cultural institutions such as: Symphony Hall, African Globe, Newark School of the Arts, City Without Walls and the Newark Boys Chorus.
