Project Experience

Provincial Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador

2001-04

Opened in 2005, The Rooms is an exciting new cultural facility housing the Provincial Museum, Archives and Art Gallery. With a unique architectural design that soars into the skyline of historic St. John’s, The Rooms is actually built upon the site of historic Fort Townsend – once one of the largest fortifications in British North America.

Having provided the initial development and facilities program for The Rooms, Lord Cultural Resources was also selected as planning and design consultants for the Provincial Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador’s permanent exhibition galleries. Our Exhibition Studio and St. John’s based Dunbar Studios worked closely with museum staff to create exhibits that celebrate the natural history, archaeology, heritage and vibrant culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. These instillations make extensive use of recreated vistas, multi-sensory dioramas, and state of the art displays to fully immerse the visitor in the provinces’ past, present and future. One of the special features of the new galleries is the in situ interpretation of the archaeological remains of Fort Townsend, underlying the new building.

Acting as a portal to the province’s history, heritage and artistic expressions, the Rooms is a significant addition to Canada’s grand cultural landscape.
