Lumpkin’s Jail Site

2011-12, 2015-16

The development of the domestic slave trade changed the lives and fortunes of all Americans and the city of Richmond was a major hub for the transfer, sale, and exchange of enslaved peoples. For over fifteen years, the Richmond Slave Trail Commission has been engaged in preserving the history of enslavement in the city. Lord Cultural Resources was selected through a competitive process to establish a concept and implementation plan to connect these important sites of conscience and ensure the stories are told well.

Working with the Commission, the Richmond City Council and the Richmond Department of Economic Development, the team has been re-engaged to complete a citywide engagement around the Lumpkin’s Jail Site, the largest slave holding facility in the U.S. until its closing during the Civil War. The team also developed an Institutional Plan to create a full visitor experience at this powerful site.
